YoungFeds.org > After Hours
All work and no play can make a young Fed... well, boring. That's why we came up with this special section called "After Hours." We've picked terrific, interesting and affordable day trips or special destinations that you should check out. Some are obvious favorites, others are off the beaten path... all are fun, educational and designed with a budget in mind.
We'll always pick a "hidden treasure" local destination for young Feds working in or visiting Washington , DC -and we'll include day trips in Virginia and Maryland too. But we'll also highlight a great trip (and great bargain) for young Feds working or visiting Federal Region cities.
Got a suggestion for a great way to spend "after hours?" We would love to hear from you.
After Hours in DC: National Postal Museum
A museum dedicated to the nation's largest group of public servants? We LOVE this place! It's the National Postal Museum, located in the historic City Post Office building next to Union Station in Washington. The building--constructed in 1914-- served as the DC post office from 1914 through 1986. The Museum was created by an agreement between the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Postal Service in 1990 and opened to the public in 1993. Although it's one of the smallest and least known museums in the Smithsonian family, it's worth a visit—especially for young Feds looking to learn a thing or two at lunch time, (it's close to dozens of federal office buildings). After Hours in VA: Monticello
Thomas Jefferson, the quintessential young Fed (he wrote the Declaration of Independence when he was only 33), might have had today's young Feds in mind when he wrote a letter to James Madison that included the line: "I hold it that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms are in the physical." After Hours in MD: Annapolis
An easy, 45 minute drive from downtown DC on Route 50 --Annapolis is the perfect choice for a perfect Fall day trip. You might be surprised to learn that Maryland’s Capital served as the temporary Capital of the United States from 1783 to 1784. The city boasts having more remaining 18th century buildings than any other city in the United States and is home to the nation’s oldest state house in continuous legislative use.[more]
Road Tripping in the FedCities: Burkburnett, TX
There's always plenty to do in the thriving Federal City of Dallas ... but young Feds looking for a taste of Old West adventure might want to drive about three hours north of the city to explore a fascinating little place called Burkburnett. [more]
